Continuing/Adult Education - Money to finish EdD

Expert: Cynthia Wolfe - 2/13/2009

Question
I'm currently an EdD student at an private online college. I'm within two classes of finishing the degree. I have been informed by the college that financial aid is at its limit. Do you know of any place that grants, or additional scholarships are available?

Answer
Hi Amy,

Thanks for asking a question. It sounds like you have completed the FAFSA, which is normally the first step. The FAFSA is the best source of grants and scholarships. If you have exhausted monies available through the FAFSA review, you should check with local entities that may have scholarships available. Check with your local school board (perhaps you are already employed as a teacher?) or teachers' union. I have known some who have received scholarships from civic organizations or honor societies they belong to, such as Rotary International or NEA. Check with the school you are attending, many have scholarships available for students, although these rarely cover all expenses. There are also some organizations which assist minorities or disabilities (I call these specialty organizations). Some specialty organizations will assist you with school expenses if you commit to serving in some capacity such as teaching inner-city school students.

Honestly, there is little money available for graduate students unless you are connected in some way with an organization or group. If you have two courses left, also consider a Wells Fargo Education loan or family loan. If you own a home, you may also have equity available to borrow against.

Good luck with your studies,
Cindy Wolfe
