Continuing/Adult Education - educational grants for recovered alcoholics/addicts

Expert: Cynthia Wolfe - 2/27/2009

Question
My original major when I started college in 1990 was Criminal Justice...being a recovering alcoholic/addict has prevented me from going into this field and also any medical field...although I wish I could be employed in these fields, I find that in Cirtus County, FL where I live, there are several openings for nail techs and cosmotologists...Withlacoochee Tech Inst is offering these courses but with the economy the way it is, I do not have the funds to enroll in these classes...my question is, are there any pell or other grants that I could be eligible for so that I may take these courses and get a trade...I have found it highly impossible to get a job without completing a usable educational course...I have been sober for almost 20 years.  Thank you for any help you can provide me with.

Answer
Hello Barbara,

Congratulations on your sobriety! I know every day is a fresh challenge. I am proud that you are planning to continue your education. Have you spoken to Withlacoochee Tech in regards to scholarship opportunities? I also suggest that you fill out the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid) found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. This is the ONLY way to see if you qualify for grants like the Pell. It take several weeks to find out what you qualify for (grants and loans). You must have your tax records ready (IRS 1040) and you can fill out the FAFSA online.

This is definitely your first step - once you get your report back you will have a better idea about how to proceed from here.

Regards,
Cindy Wolfe
