Question I want to study Acting in Acting School in New York City, but I'm not sure if I should go to Westchester Community College, close to my home, and then transfer with my Associate's to another college in Westchester or Pace University in New York City, or another College or University in New York State ?
Answer Hello Adam,
Thanks for asking a question. There are many considerations when choosing a college such as the quality of the program, the cost of tuition, and lifestyle changes your selection may require. Have you filled out the FAFSA yet? This Free Application For Student Aid (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) identifies how much (if any) federal money you qualify for and if student loans are available. Once you know your feedback from the FAFSA, you can determine which school is in your budget. Westchester Community College is less expensive, which is generally the case with Community Colleges. You must also consider living expenses if you choose a college away from home. Will you plan to work while at college, and if so, where are the jobs? This is also a consideration. On the other hand, NYC has many opportunities to work in your field because of its acting community.
I looked at both schools' websites and each program has its good points. However, you must be very careful about planning to transfer. For example, if you graduate from Westchester CC with an A.S.S. in Performing Arts (http://www.sunywcc.edu/academics/academic_programs/0356pera.htm), it does not fully transfer to Pace (http://www.pace.edu/page.cfm?doc_id=10348 and http://www.pace.edu/page.cfm?doc_id=12973). There is no matriculation agreement between WCC and PU for this program. In other words you may spend time, money and effort and find out that you are not as far along as you thought when you transfer to Pace.
These are some considerations when you think about your path to a degree. I suggest that you write down positives and negatives about each program and choice. Then make an appointment with each school and go visit the campus. Talk to other students who are interested in the same major. You have taken the first step to ask questions, thanks for asking a question today!
