Question Hi Cynthia, I have a Bachelors in Early Childhood education from 1983. I have been at at home Mom for 20 years & the last 4 years I have been working as a substitute teacher at a high school.I am interested in getting a full time job now with benefits but feel as though I will need to continue my education. The early childhood field does not pay well so I am looking into other options.I've considered special education as one idea but I am open to any suggestions. We are sending two of our children to college right now, so I am not willing to spend too much time or money on my education. Some type of program online is a possibility while I sub. at the school might be good.I would appreciate any ideas you may have! Thanks so much for your time & attention. Sue
Answer Hi Sue,
Congrats on getting your kids in college! Now it is time for you to start thinking about what you want to do 'when you grow up.'!!!! Online schools are not easy, and they often require more time commitment than traditional schools. Most of these programs are accelerated and move fast so there is no opportunity to catch up if you get behind.
If you were a teacher (and still a sub) you have a need to serve your fellow man. Have you considered nursing school? That career is one of the best to be in right now, almost recession-proof. Teachers are typically good students so I am confident that this may work for you. I suggest that you check into your local community college to find out what kinds of programs they have...nursing...lab tech...radiation tech...etc. Of course, if you want to continue in education, I recommend working on a masters' degree in education, perhaps online/distance learning!
You have a world of possibilities in front of you. Don't choose the cheapest or easiest. Choose what you want to do and you will be happy.
