Experience I am an instructor at the University of Phoenix, working in online and classroom modalities. I am also a student at Northcentral University, where I am working on a PhD in Business Administration, with a specialty in Management. My MBA is from Troy University, 2001, and I have a BS, Environmental Science, from Troy University, 1980. Read about my experiences as an online student at my blog thinkPhD.
I am a Business Administration graduate and very much interested in continuing my education, however applying to local colleges and universities at the moment is not my best option as I recently gave birth to my beautiful daughter less than 2 months back.
I was thinking of taking the degree online. Now the question is:
Do you recommend studying online?
What are the best colleges/universities in any country that provide online studies and degrees and can be trusted?
I would truly appreciate your reply.
Thank you in advance
Kind Regards
Answer Hello Huda,
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I trust you are getting adjusted to motherhood and finding it to be enjoyable and rich. I have two grown children but remember the days when they were very small babies. I miss those days!
Thank you for asking a question. The list that you are asking for cannot be compiled, because every country has its own system of accreditation. There is no universal accrediting body so educational systems are different from region to region. For example, you may take course in France, but Canada may not recognize those course and you have to take them over again. Or, you may become a doctor in Pakistan, but then not be allowed to practice medicine in Brazil. Likewise, what is accredited in the USA (where I am) may not be valid in South Africa.
I suggest that you first find out which are the accrediting bodies in your country, and search their database for accredited online schools. Once you have that list contact those schools and ask for information. Discuss your choice with other students, and ask to audit an online class.
Here in the USA there are some schools which are 100% distance learning, and others which have distance learning programs. Even the Ivy League schools have distance learning programs! This format has come a long way since its introduction and you will find greater acceptance. However, even some fields still use traditional learning methods. Business administration has many schools using distance learning modality.
You must be highly motivated to study online. You will not have face to face interaction with students or professors. I recommend it only to those who have the time and are self-aware. You must also have the support of your family as you will spend many hours in front of the computer, writing, and studying. Now that you have a small child, you will need time when you are not being a mother to "go to school." Right now she has nap time but soon that will go away. Do you have a nanny or sitter, or a family member that can take her for a few hours each day? Your first few classes will not be intense but as you move along in your program you will need more time for uninterrupted studying.
I hope this information will help you in your search. Good luck with your studying,
Cindy Wolfe
