Continuing/Adult Education - Online GED programs and Colleges online?

Expert: Cynthia Wolfe - 8/19/2009

Question
Hello, I am a nineteen year old who dropped out of highschool when I was in grade 10. I feel very embarrassed of this and also have a bit of a social anxiety. Are there any G.E.D programs that you can take online? That are actually legit sites and that I will actually receive my GED through? And also, can you go to an online college with just your GED? I am very ashamed of my actions in the past and I would like a discreet way of learning the things that I will need to be successful in my life.

Answer
Hi Caitlin,

Congratulations for deciding to take the step to complete your secondary high school education. Check with your local school district, non-profits, or church as they typically offer low cost GED programs. There are a number of sites online, but I have no experience with them. I recommend the community approach (especially at a community college) because these groups often have career placement. Simply taking the GED is only the first step.

You can also buy some instructional manuals at your local book store, like Barnes & Nobles or Books a Million. Check Half.com or eBay for discounted copies.

Here is a simple list of online links from a search engine:

There are many who dropped out of high school early - don't consider your situation unique. You only missed two years of school and you are still very young! If you are hanging around friends who make fun of you for wanting to improve your life and career by taking the GED, then you have the wrong kind of friends. Your family and community should be proud of you as you want to better yourself.

I am proud of you - now go get that GED!
Kind regards,
Cindy Wolfe
