Question Dear Ms. Wolfe,
I have a friend and I would like to help her learn to read. She is 55 and because of childhood illness was unable to complete her education in her native Jamaica. I would say she is a functional illiterate with perhaps a 3rd grade or so reading level. My question is: she has access to a computer; would you know of any computer programs or software that you might recommend to help her improve her reading abilities.
Thanks very much for your help,
Sheldon
Answer Hello Sheldon,
I think it is honorable that you are looking for ways to help your friend. Having worked with adults, I believe that she will be much more successful working with a literacy group rather than on her own with software. She needs the support of other adults and a tutor.
I did search for free software downloads but was not impressed with their claims or programs.
Learning to read is quite difficult and adults are easily deterred by its difficulty. In our community, we have a free literacy program that matches need with tutors. Call your local community colleges, or bealth and human services office for information about free programs.
