Continuing/Adult Education - High School Diploma

Expert: Cynthia Wolfe - 9/3/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
In 1982 I was to graduate from high school, but I could not since I failed my last quarter of US Government. I passed all other classes and all 3 quarters of government, but in Fairfax County, VA at the time, you had to pass all 4 quarters of gov't class to graduate. I was wondering if there is any way to go back to school online or locally to get my diploma instead of a GED. I am so close and was wondering if there are any schools that will accept my finished classes and allow me to just take the government class for my diploma. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Diana

ANSWER: Hi Diana,

It's great to hear that you are planning to earn your GED diploma! Your education is so very important and can really make a difference in your personal development and career opportunities.

I am not aware of any opportunities to take just one class. You will need to take the entire GED test which is composed of five subject areas.

Here is the website for more information:
http://www.acenet.edu/AM/Template.cfm?Section=GED_TS

and the FAQ page:
http://www.acenet.edu/Content/NavigationMenu/ged/about/faq.htm

Your local community college probably offers the test a few times a year. Check this link/put in your zip code to see where you can take the test: http://www.acenet.edu/resources/GED/center_locator.cfm

Good luck with the test!
Kind Regards,

QUESTION: Thanks for the answer and the links Cindy, but I was actually wondering how to get my diploma, not my GED. Is that possible at this late date? I was hoping maybe most of my credits would be good and I could only take a few classes or something. Even if you dont know, can you point me to some place that might?

Thank you so much for your time and your help.

Diana

Answer
Hi Diana,

To my knowledge, based on the information that you have provided, it is not possible to get your high school diploma. You would have to enroll back into high school and your school district is unlikely to allow an adult to sit in on high school classes. You need to earn a GED.
