Continuing/Adult Education - Master degree or experience?

Expert: Mike Smith - 9/3/2009

Question
I am 47 years old and have a Bachelors Degree in Network Communications Management but with little or no work experience. I would like to know that because of this reason, should I attend a community college to obtain some Info tech certifications (MCITP,CCNA,CISSP) just to name a few. I also have the desire to go back to school for my Master Degree in Info Systems with a concentration in a technical environment. At this point of my life would seeking the certifications be a waste of time and money? A Masters Degree would be nice but would that hurt my chances of obtaining employment because of my lack of experience?

Answer
Hi Ernest,

At this point of my life
would seeking the certifications be a waste of time and money?
Not a chance. Any education is money in your pocket. Also, once you get it in your mind to continue school, ("I also have the desire to go back to school for my Master Degree") it does not go away.Get your schooling done while you have the desire. It won't be long until that desire is gone.
("A Masters Degree would be nice but would that hurt my chances of obtaining employment because of my lack of experience?") What if you wanted to open your own business? A MA is pretty impressive at that point. You will compete with people who have the "idea to open a business" and do not have the education. Get my drift?
Good luck and let me know how it turns out,
Mike
