Question
Hello, I will have Mirena inserted and I was told because I never had a birth that this might be very difficult or nearly impossible and that I might have to have it inserted under general anaesthetic. As it is just a short procedure, will I still have to be intubated?

Answer
Hi Min,

I would not recommend the Mirena IUD at all. I'm not a medical doctor so just want you to know that. This is some information right from the manufacturer's website

"IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT MIRENA®:
Candidates for Mirena® have had a child, are in stable relationship, and have no risk or history of ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease. Mirena® does not protect against HIV or STDs. Ovarian cysts may occur and typically disappear. Complications may occur from placement. Expulsion (where Mirena® falls completely or partially out of the uterus) may occur. Missing periods or irregular bleeding is common in the first few months followed by shorter, lighter periods."

So you see that the manufacturer of Mirena IUD would not recommend you to have this type of birth control. If I were you, I would reconsider this decision. I would also be concerned about having to have anesthesia for this. Please email me at DWooley97@yahoo.com and we can talk more.

Sincerely,
Diane W.
