Contraception and VD - NUVA RING

Expert: Mia - 2/27/2009

Question
Hi, I have been on the NuvaRing for about 3 years.  I have always had regular periods.  This last time I took the ring out for my period week, I didn't get my period.  I am freaked out.  I went and got the first response pregnancy test (a 4 pack)  I have take a test for the last couple mornings, I know it is best to test in the morning.  Both of the tests were negative.  I don't know if something else is wrong or it is just the birth control.  please help if you can.

Answer
Hi Beth,

A missed period is a common side effect of birth control. Even after having regular periods for 3 years, you can still miss one occasionally or stop having them. Since birth control prevents ovulation and causes the uterus lining to become thinner, what you usually experience is not a true period but a withdrawal bleed due to the drop in hormones during that week. So over time many women will have shorter, lighter periods and even stop. As long as you have been using the Nuva Ring correctly then your chance of pregnancy is very low. I recommend waiting a few days and taking another home test to be sure. If it is negative and you do not get your period again next month, give your doctor a call.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions let me know.

-Mia
