Contraception and VD/Getting of birth control pills after 20 years

Question
Hello-
I am have been on the birth control pill for 22 years (straight) and am considering getting of of it due to my age (I am 40).  I am married, healthy, a non-smoker but have read about the dangers of hormones and blood clots.  I was on Ortho-novum for awhile and now on Loestrin.  I don't really feel bad from the pill- but honestly after 20+ years I guess I don't know how I would feel otherwise.  Everytime I approach the subject with my doctor she says there's no need to get off and that it protects me from some cancers.  I have yet to find an alternate method so I continue.  I know I may still get pregnant at 40 but I am sure my odds are lower.  Should I try to get off to see how I feel?  I have heard the first few months are bad.  I am in any danger of the continued use?

Answer
Hi Lynda,
Thanks for your question. I'm not a medical professional so I urge you to ask your questions to your own doctor. But I see that you have done that but I always like to say that. In my opinion, I think you're doing the right thing by going off the pill. I was on the pill for 10 years a long time ago. At the time, I didn't really know much about the side effects and risks but I'm glad I went off. May I ask if you are married or sexually active? ( So I can advise you with more information) Do you know about Natural Family Planning? That may be a good alternative for you if you do need a birth control method. I do think that staying on the pill for this long in your situation may be detrimental to your health. Please feel free to email me at DWooley97@yahoo.com
