About Ginger Moreno
Expertise
I can answer most questions regarding Latin American/Spanish recipes (and if I don`t know the answer I have many cookbooks that will probably contain the answer.) Several of my recipes appeared on the Food Network. I love to work on my original recipes - and make the tried and true. I am really passionate about learning different ethnic cuisines and I treasure all of the grandmothers out there who have recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation.

Experience
Past/Present clients:I have catered for several gymnastics clubs. I teach cooking classes for 4-H, for a facility for the elderly, for a women's club monthly meeting, and the latest is at a supermarket showing people who sign up for the cooking class how easy good cooking can be.

Question
Hi Ginger,
My question is, is it possible to run a small business out of your home cooking sandwiches, casseroles, salads etc., you see my husband was just diagnosed with cancer. I need to stay at home as much as possible. But I need to have some income. How long could I do this out of my home.
Thank You

Answer
Hi Janice-
I am so sorry to hear about your husband - health problems, especially around the holidays, can be extremely hard on a family - and my prayers are with you.

Now for your question.  Here is my suggestion so you won't have to go through the license process which can be lengthy and very expensive. I would make up some business cards (on the computer) and take them to the managers/owners of "Mom and Pop" type restaurants. With the card make up a list of foods you can do for them (salads, sandwiches, soups, etc.)  They may ask you to bring in a sample and even ask to see your kitchen (to make sure you have clean quarters, etc.) and then, perhaps you can get a few clients.  If you have a basement or other room you can put a "kitchen" in - that would be even better.  This way you can start small and see where this takes you.

I remember speaking to a friend of a friend who brought her recipe for making her special soup to one of the local restaurants every day - she had to cook it there but because of that she was able to build on to that and at home, before going to the restaurant she would make up a huge batch of salad dressing which the restaurant paid her extra for.  This restaurant spoke to another restaurant about her and then she started making muffins for them!  She made a comfortable living at it and I wish I still knew her but she moved away and I really don't remember what restaurant she did it for.  I do remember she also needed to be home because she had  small child. She never had to get a license and she cooked out of her garage (that was made into a small kitchen).

I hope this helps - my prayers are with you.  Take care.
