Cooking & Restaurant Management - Opening a Mexican Restaurant

Expert: Mike Handy - 11/17/2007

Question
Hi Mike, I am planning to open a restaurant in India for Mexican and Lebanese cuisenes. How should I go about it? Whom should I contact for getting the Mexican ingredients for? Is there any course that I can do for managing a Mexican restaurant.. right from procurement of ingredients to managing  a restaurant. Please guide me.
Your comments/ advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Regardless of the Restaurant cuisine, the basics for managing a restaurant are the same.  Cash management, employee management, inventory management, etc... are going to be key.  A good program that will teach you what you need and is inexpensive is at http://www.restaurantowner.com/products/item19.cfm .

Another option for getting the necessary management training would be either to get hired by a reputable restaurant chain in your area and learn from them, or enroll yourself in a university with a good Hotel and Restaurant Management course.
As far as purchasing your "Mexican Food" products, I would speak to a customer service rep at www.Sysco.com or www.Kraft.com .  If they cannot help you, they can probably point you in the right direction.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck,
Mike Handy
