Question I was wondering how i could copyright a cartoon it's just a little character i made up but i think someone my be intrested in buying it or something.I wanted to get the word out about my cartoon but i thought it should be legally copyrighted because someone could steal my idea if i put it on a poster board or something. In the U.S.
Answer Hi,
Copyright is established the moment a "work of art" has been created, and does not have to be registered.
However, when somebody copies your work, you should be able to prove that you created the work before. If you can do that (by showing a publication date of something similar), the copyright is safe.
Look at this link http://www.copyright.gov/ for lots of further information about copyright in the US. (I get the impression that you live in the US).
Regards,
Rene Hasekamp.
