Question
Two questions --
can i do the patent search with one lawyer, and then do the rest with another lawyer?
Is it acceptable to ask a patent lawyer to sign a confidentiality agreement, or is it rude or insulting?
1. Yes. However, often a lawyer will not accept another person's patent search, for good reason. He/she may want to do her own search. For example, searches by invention promotion companies are notorious for being unreliable.
2. You can ask, but most patent attorneys will not sign them. They swore a serious oath to keep their client's affairs confidential, so you have that protection. Most, if not all, of us practitioners, when a potential client starts to tell us about their invention, and it sounds like a conflict, stop the potential client right there and say they can't help them.
