Question
Suppose that I had invented a pillow case with grommets around the opening that you could cinch closed, and that this invention was useful somehow (so utility was not an issue)... would this be patentable? Ie: could the addition of a cinching mechanism in this context (of bedding) be considered novel and non-obvious, even if something like a cinchable shopping bag would not..?

Answer
If grommets are a known closing element, such as for shopping bags, under the "obvious" standards, which were significantly raised a few years back by a Supreme Court ruling, in my humble opinion, your pillow case would not qualify as eligible for a U.S. utility patent.

Canada has their own rules, so you would have to check with a Canadian patent agent or attorney for Canada.

Best wishes on your project.

Beware of U.S. invention marketing promoters.
