CorelDraw/CorelDRAW X3 - Read Only

Question
I am using Microsoft XP and CorelDRAW X3.   I have been using this set up for years.  All of a sudden today... If I create a new file or use an existing file and then save under a different name, all the files are saving as read only.  Where are the settings for this?  I need them to NOT save as read only.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Stacy

Another person had a similar problem and I answered it around 05/21/09, you could try to find it on AllExperts if you like. Sorry to say this site does not let me make a link for you.

I know of no CorelDraw settings which make saved files read-only. It is more likely a file-locking issue or that the folder permissions have been changed where you are storing your files. Are you working on a network? Could an admin have changed the folder permissions recently? Here is my answer from the previous question I received in May:

I think that one of these three things is occuring:
1. The server is not releasing the file lock when you close the file. Usually this problem goes away on NTFS file systems which are substantially more robust that FAT or FAT32.

2. CorelDraw really IS creating a file with its "READ-ONLY" attribute set (extremely doubtful). You could right-click/properties on the .cdr file in Windows Explorer and see if the Read Only box is ticked.

3. The destination folder does not grant write permissions to all users. Right-click the destination folder on your server, click Properties/Security and make sure the relevant security group has 'Modify' permissions. You will need Admin rights to make changes here and the above method is for Server 2003. The procedure is substantially more complicated, long-winded and annoying with Server 2008 but please don't get me started on that one!

The previous questioner replied that item 2 had fixed it but when I asked for more detail they did not reply again, so I still don't know how to resolve it permanently.

Please let me know what happens!

My main area of continuous expertise with CorelDraw involves setting press advertisements and I have rarely used it to produce complex drawings. However as director of a small company I have amassed a good deal of background knowledge of computers, various printers and networks over the years. When it comes to problem-solving, I have a long history of having nobody to ask but myself and, lately, the internet!
