CorelDraw/Changing Fonts

Question
Dear Ran!

I am now using CorelDRAW 12 with Windows HP2003 and having problems with changing fonts.

I type Chinese Words and want to change its font but it's impossible for me to do so because when I open the "Font List" most of the fonts becomes unselected or changed. I noted that sometimes English fonts are impossible too.

I, however, can change the font if I copy it to another application and then paste it back to CDR 12.

I am wondering what causes the problem and can I solve this trouble only in CDR 12?

I am looking forward to your replies!

Sorry for the length in my questions!

Yours sincerely,

Answer
Hi Touch

I have no experience with Chinese font files but I would think they work the same as Roman fonts, just look different.

It sounds like some of your font files might be damaged or corrupted. To get to the bottom of this I suggest uninstalling all of your fonts except for these standard Windows fonts which should NOT be removed:

Courier New
Arial
Times New Roman
Symbol
Wingdings
MS Serif
MS Sans Serif

To uninstall the fonts is very easy. Open the folder C:\windows\fonts, then in another window, create a new folder on the C: drive called fonts2 or something. Then just drag the fonts out of C:\windows\fonts into your new folder. This will automatically uninstall the fonts from Windows.

When you have done that, see how CorelDraw behaves and check that you can use Arial and Times successfully.

Then you can start installing all of your other fonts again, just drag them back into the C:\windows\fonts folder again. This will automatically re-install the fonts.

Test CorelDraw after each font is added, or add 10-20 at a time and test each batch. Using this method you will find out which fonts are causing your trouble and you can delete them permanently. This process will take half an hour and I hope it will solve your problem - good luck!

My main area of continuous expertise with CorelDraw involves setting press advertisements and I have rarely used it to produce complex drawings. However as director of a small company I have amassed a good deal of background knowledge of computers, various printers and networks over the years. When it comes to problem-solving, I have a long history of having nobody to ask but myself and, lately, the internet!
