Question

dance 2
Hi Ran,

Its me again.  I am trying to fade/gradient the attached art so that it resembles the art that is showing; however, I am just a beginner at this and am currently grouping each line of boxes and fading them.  I tried to group all the boxes box it stated that I had to much selected.  Is there any help you can give that will help me separate the attached art for film easier then what I am currently doing it?

Answer
Hi Kathy

Select all of the boxes at once and Combine them (Ctrl+L). Then press F11 (Fountain Fill) and choose Type=Linear, Color blend=Custom. Swivel the angle in the top-right window with your mouse (hold Ctrl key to constrain to 15º increments). Then sort out your Color blend ribbon to how you want it, click the little box at the left end and choose its color, then the right end, and then add a mid-point or two by double-clicking inside the ribbon. You can slide the points around or delete one by selecting it then pressing Delete. Job done!

If your PC whines about selecting too many objects together, throw it at the boss and demand a new one - or, you can select the boxes a few at a time to Combine them and eventually combine everything together. Combining is different from Grouping because it makes two or more objects into one object (even though they're not necessarily connected) and this is why the fountain fill works. Grouping would not work, because each little box would adopt its own individual fountain fill. Also with Grouping you can't do them a few at a time because you'd end up with groups within groups which can get a bit messy.

My main area of continuous expertise with CorelDraw involves setting press advertisements and I have rarely used it to produce complex drawings. However as director of a small company I have amassed a good deal of background knowledge of computers, various printers and networks over the years. When it comes to problem-solving, I have a long history of having nobody to ask but myself and, lately, the internet!
