QUESTION: In response to another question to which you responded that a couple must wait 3 years for an agreed upon divorce but not for other types.
What other types of divorces are there in Costa Rica?
I am an expat (not a resident) married to a tica for 16 months.

ANSWER: Basically there are two types of divorces, 1- mutual consent and 2- contested divorce (Where only one party wants to divorce or does not agree on the terms)

Recently the Supreme Court eliminated this 3 year wait, now couples can divorce at any time.

QUESTION: thank u for your response.  i now have a followup: does that mean i can divorce now after being married only 16 months even if she contests it and not have to be separated 1 year b/4 divorce?
