Costa Rica/Travel to Costa Rica

Question
Hi,
We want to trade our timeshare and travel on American Airlines to Costa Rica. Don't know where to go but we do want to be on the beach. Can you give us any ideas where we might stay? Also should we rent a car? Should we be concerned about safety? What time of year is best to go? Anything you can share?
Thank you.

Answer
There are many nice beaches to visit in Costa Rica, most are in the pacific coastwhich is about 5 hours away from San José, some of them are Avellanas and Junquillal beach which are not very crowded, some of the most popular beaches are Brasilito, Tamarindo and Flamingo which are next to each other also in the pacific.
Some of the closer beaches are Puntarenas, Jacó and Manuel Antonio, this latter one also has a national park and they are about 3-4 hours away from San José.
A car rental is a good idea to get around Costa Rica, regarding safety, Costa Rica is very safe but of course you should use common sense as in all palces, in recent years there has been a theft problem for both tourists and nationals, do not leave your car with visible stuff inside and unattended because there are a lot of window breakins.
Any time of the year is nice but Christmas is celebrated all month so it is very festive, Between July and October it rains on and off in the afternoons although it does not stop anyone from their daily routin.
If you like I can help you reserve a vehicle and get reservations at a hotel, you can e mail me with the information on dates and places, how many people and how long you expect to stay.
