Counseling/Will I ever recover?

Question
Hello Laura,

I don't even know where to start as there are so many places I could take this. I guess I'll just work on the most pressing issue.

Back in Oct of last year I was "sexually assaulted" at work by a coworker. Yes, I did report it. Anyways... I had a serious breakdown after the rape and ended up in the hospital for two weeks due to depression and wanting to end my life.  I cant seem to move on with life... I just really want to die. Life feels pointless even though I am a Christian and have a strong faith.

I just feel like things could never possibly be worth staying around for. I don't think i'll ever have a boyfriend or ever have sex. I lost my job after the rape and I don't even want to look for a new one. Weird for me cuz I used to be a workaholic. I'm only 19 but none of my dreams matter to me anymore.

Please help me make sense of this. I need something to help me want to stay. Thanks in advance for your time.

Dear Michelle,

Thanks for writing.

I can understand how your life has been turned upside down and how it may feel like this is something that you can never overcome. Most of us face something in our lives that leave us feeling that way... but we survive. And life does become worth living again. ...unless we give up on it.

What you do with your present and future is up to you, but I hope you decide to fight for it. You're 19 and have so much joy ahead. It would be a shame to let someone else take that away from you.

Please get some therapy. Most cities have a free rape crisis center that can help if you have no insurance and no money. If you have choices, I recommend seeing someone who does EMDR, LENS (low energy neurofeedback system) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Each approaches trauma in a different way but all can be effective.

Good luck,

Laura Giles
