Question
Good day!

My question is: Why incestuous relationship between first cousins becomes prevalent? Here in my country, first cousin marriage is considered as taboo. But what are the psychological factors why it occurs?

Thank you very much!

Answer
Hello,

First I think you are starting out with a faulty premise. I am not sure that first cousin relationships ARE becoming more prevalent. At least not where I live. Not to mention that in many places marriage between first cousins is illegal.

I am not sure I understand the question about psychological factors. Are you implying that sexual attraction is pathological? Most people who grow up in a close family situation do not develop sexual attraction to each other. However, cousins who do not grow up in a close relationship do not have those same barriers. I don't think attraction has anything to do with psychological factors, but of proximity.

Sincerely,
