Question
Looking for a country song by a male artist.  Talks about a couple in love who somehow get separated, but he never forgets her and he is admitted to a nursing home and sees her through the window or down the hall, but she no longer remembers him.  PLEASE HELP ME, this is driving me nuts.  Believe it was from 1990s.

Answer
It sounds a lot like "Where Have You Been" by Kathy Mattea; but you said the singer was male.  The song is about a couple in love, never spending one night apart until they both were in a nursing home on separate floors.  It was written by Jon Vezner, Kathy's husband about his grandparents.

Lyrics:

Claire had all but given up
When she and Edwin fell in love
She touched his face and shook her head
In disbelief she sighed and said
In many dreams I've held you near
Now at last you're really here

Chorus
Where have you been?
I've looked for you for ever and a day
Where have you been?
I'm just not myself when you're away

He asked her for her hand for life
Then she became a salesman's wife
He was home each night by 8
But one stormy evening he was late
Her frightened tears fell to the floor
Until his key turned in the door

Chorus

They'd never spent a night apart
For 60 yrs she heard him snore
Now they're in a hospital
In seperate beds on different floors

Claire soon lost her memory, forgot the names of family
She never spoke a word again
Then one day they wheeled him in
He held her hand and stroked her hair
In a fragile voice she said

Chorus

Where have you been
Ive searched for you forever and a day
Where have you been
Im just not myself when your away
Im just not myself when your away

I can usually locate song by artist, excerpts and even circa around when the song was released in country, rock and other genres. ****** PLEASE do not ask me about videos. I do not watch them.******** I've been singing since I started talking, singing in public since I was 7. Still at it at 56. I have an extensive repertoire as well as lots of music. I also actively research for other people, including local djs, music that no one else can find, especially being given just paraphrased lines of songs. I'm the one @ karaoke that usually gets asked, "Who did this song?" or "Do you know a song that goes" and if it's country, I usually can name the song and artist, sometimes give within a couple of years the year of release. I've got a lot of lyrics in my database, as well as friends with working musicians who do open mic jams who have even more extensive databases than I do.
