Question
I heard this song a long time ago, about a young guy who worked I think at a gas station-type place, giving people directions and such and talking about a girl he loved who's dad said he wasn't good enough for her. So he's writing songs and trying to work and earn enough and become a man so her dad will accept him. It's something like that, and I can't remember the lyrics or tune or singer for the life of me. Can you help?

Answer
I cast a wide search and wasn't able to get anything back that resembled your info given.  How long ago did you hear this?  Some folks 'long time ago is back in the 60's or earlier, some it is the 80's.  Plus any lyrics at all?  I'm assuming the singer was male????

I also actively research for other people, including local djs, music that no one else can find, especially being given just paraphrased lines of songs. I'm the one @ karaoke that usually gets asked, "Who did this song?" or "Do you know a song that goes" and if it's country, I usually can name the song and artist, sometimes give within a couple of years the year of release. I've got a lot of lyrics in my database, as well as friends with working musicians who do open mic jams who have even more extensive databases than I do.
