Question
I am trying to find a song where the chorus is a series of names of rivers and the chorus ends with Monongahela. I thought it was sung by Alabama or the Oak Ridge Boys. There was a music video I saw for this song and it shows the band on a barge going down a river

Answer
Hello Ed,

That sounds like "Gonna Take A Lot Of River", a #1 Country hit for The Oak Ridge Boys in 1988:

I ain't gonna ride no rail or hitchhike down no highway
I aint' going nowhere feeling the way I do
Because my baby's long gone and nothings going my way
I'm gonna let this muddy water just wash away my blues

Gonna take a lot of river to keep this broken heart afloat
Gonna take a lot of river, running all the live long days
Gonna take the Mississippi, the Monongahela and the Ohio
Gonna take a lot of river to wash these blues away

Well, I wish I was a tug boat pushing and pulling them barges along
Moving on the water with a heart made of iron and steel
There wouldn't be no women that could ever take my loving and do me wrong
I could work all day with nothing in the world to feel

Gonna take a lot of river to keep this broken heart afloat
Gonna take a lot of river, running all the live long days
Gonna take the Mississippi, the Monongahela and the Ohio
Gonna take a lot of river to wash these blues away

Is she in new orleans, is she a cajun queen
I wonder what she's doing now
But if I know her, she's got rings and furs
Struggling along somehow

Gonna take a lot of river to keep this broken heart afloat
Gonna take a lot of river, running all the live long days
Gonna take the Mississippi, the Monongahela and the Ohio
Gonna take a lot of river to wash these blues away

Gonna take a lot of river to keep this broken heart afloat
Gonna take a lot of river, running all the live long days
Gonna take the Mississippi, the Monongahela and the Ohio
Gonna take a lot of river to wash these blues away

Glad to be of help. Cheers.........Mel.

I have been hooked on Country music since first hearing Jim Reeves in the late 50s. Two of the greatest nights of my life were seeing The Mavericks and Reba McEntire live in London. I am more at home with traditional Country music, but am happy to try and help with any questions relating to songs up to 2000. Please note that I DO NOT have the same knowledge about country music videos or singers private lives.
