AboutBeth Burgess Expertise I can answer just about any question about lyrics or the artists who recorded the songs--80s and 90s country especially. I don't watch many new videos, but the older the video question, the more likely I am to be able to answer it.
Experience I've been a country music fan for all of my 25 years! I somehow have a knack for being able to remember all the words to all the songs (and who sang them for the most part) even though I can't carry a tune to save my life!
Education/Credentials I'm currently enrolled in law school (so if I can't remember an answer off the top of my head, I have excellent research skills!)
Question Trying to find the album for this song. Popular around Baltimore, MD about 1980. The title was "This is the last cowboy song", and one of the last stanzas had a line about Chief Red Cloud. But that is all I can remember.
Answer Hi Neal! I think the song you're looking for may be "The Last Cowboy Song," written by Ed Bruce, and most popularly performed by The Highwaymen. Here's a link to a very cool video (Willie, Waylon, Johnny, and Kris on stage together!):

This the last cowboy song:
The end of a hundred year waltz.
The voices sound sad as they're singin' along.
Another piece of America's lost.
(Waylon Jennings)
He rides the feed lots, clerks in the markets,
On weekends sellin' tobacco and beer.
And his dreams of tomorrow, surrounded by fences,
But he'll dream tonight of when fences weren't here.
(Kris Kristoferson)
He blazed the trail with Lewis and Clark,
And eyeball to eyeball, old Wyatt backed down.
He stood shoulder to shoulder with Travis in Texas.
And rode with the 7th when Custer went down.

(Willie Nelson)
Remmington showed us how he looked on canvas,
And Louis Lamour has told us his tale.
Me and Johnny and Waylon and Kris sing about him,
And wish to God we could have ridden his trail.
(Johnny Cash Verse Spoken Over Chorus:)
The old Chisolm trail is covered in concrete now,
They truck it to market in fifty foot rigs.
They roll by his markings and don't even notice,
Like living and dying was all he ever did.
