A female country singer recorded a song several years ago including the lyrics "underneath that Allegheny sun", "I guess I should have known the highway was his home".  Can you figure out what the singer and song title is from this?

Hi Sandy!  I've found the song you were asking about.  It's called "Greener Than The Grass We Laid On," and Tanya Tucker is the female artist that recorded it.  However, I also found that this song was written by David Allan Coe.  Enjoy!  Hope this helps!
