Country Music/Kenny Roger's song

Question
I just remember liking this song... it was maybe late 90's. Kenny Roger's sang a song about a cop and I think something about an abused woman and maybe a cover-up for killing the abuser? I don't think that it was ever played much. Any ideas? Thanks

Answer
Hi Shannon!  I haven't been able to find any song matching this description by Kenny Rogers.  However, when I first read your question, the first song that came to mind was Chris Knight's "Love and a .45," which is on his self-titled album that was released in 1998.  I've included the lyrics below as well as a link to a video of Chris playing the song live.  It may not be the exact song you're looking for (and I'll keep looking!), but it's a really great song that is along the same lines...  Hope this helps!

Badge number 301
Sits in his car and stares at his gun
He wipes the the blood from his shirt,
The sweat from his brow
He got out this time but he don't know how

Well he'd go on home but nobody's there
No one to hold no one to care
There was a time he had someone
But one day he came home, she was gone

Love and a .45
Are all you need to get through the night
One'll kill you one'll keep you alive
Love and a .45

Parole number fourteen two
Stands on the corner like she used to do
She's been away awhile so she's a little afraid
And the judge said he didn't want to see her again

But she's got no money she's got no rent
The money she had is already spent
Cause a couple of weeks ago she learned her lesson
Went and brought herself a little Smith and Wesson

Love and a .45
Are all you need to get through the night
One'll kill you one'll keep you alive
Love and a .45

At 3:15 he got a call, somebody heard a scream behind a wall
At a little motel down by the bay
But before he got there, they got away

Well she was all right just a little roughed up
So he took her down to the coffee shop
The report he filed said "victim unknown"
Now she waits up nights for him to come home

Love and a .45
Are all you need to get through the night
One'll kill you one'll keep you alive
Love and a .45

Love and a .45
Are all you need to get thru the night
One'll kill you one'll keep you alive
Love and a .45

I can answer just about any question about lyrics or the artists who recorded the songs--80s and 90s country especially. I don't watch many new videos, but the older the video question, the more likely I am to be able to answer it.

Experience

I've been a country music fan for all of my 20+ years! I somehow have a knack for being able to remember all the words to all the songs (and who sang them for the most part) even though I can't carry a tune to save my life!

Education/Credentials
Juris Doctor. (So if I can't remember an answer off the top of my head, I have the research skills to figure it out!)
