Question
Hi Dr. Allen,

I'm writing a novel.  The protagonist is a 12 year-old from Southern California who thinks he doesn't like country music until he learns otherwise.

Can you tell me the name of that popular country music song in which the singer is relating his discussion with a man who he happens to meet.  The singer tells him that he's a country music singer.  The man he is speaking to then advises him that he's just not into country music.  In the song, the singer invites the man to one of his concerts, whereby the man who thought he didn't like country music finds himself a fan.  It's a great song.  Can you please provide the name and artist.  Thanks much!

Answer
I believe the song you're talking about is by Trace Adkins called "Songs About Me"

"Songs About Me"

I met a guy on the red eye
He spotted my guitar
And said what do you do?
I said, I sing for a living,
Country music mixed with
A little rock and a little blues
He said I'm sorry
But I've never been crazy
'bout that twang and trains and hillbilly thing
What ever made you want to sing stuff like that?
I just looked at him and laughed and said

Cause it's songs about me
And who I am
Songs about loving and living
And good hearted women and family and God
Yeah they're all just
Songs about me
Songs about me

So I offered him tickets
I said you'll see what I mean
If you show up tonight
He said I doubt you'll change my opinion
I'll be kind of busy, but hey man, I'll try

Then later on when we finished our songs
About scars and cars and broken hearts
I saw him, he was standing there
Right next to the stage
And he shouted
Man you were right
It was like you sang those

Songs about me
And who I am
Songs about loving and living
And good hearted women and family and God
Yeah they're all just
Songs about me
Songs about me

So I'll just keep on singing
'til I hear the whole world singing those

Songs about me
And who I am
Songs about loving and living
And good hearted women and family and God
Yeah they're all just
Songs about me
Songs about me

Expertise

I am a long time fan of Bluegrass and older country/folk music (20-70's) and have a fairly extensive tape and sheet music library of the same and have played the music non-professionally for many years. I can (hopefully) assist with information about artists and lyrics. Please try to make it the older stuff, I don't listen to much "modern" country except George Strait anymore....it ain't got no soul anymore :)

Experience

I grew up in the 60's listening to all the old greats and learned to play the music. I have spent a lot of time reading about the genres and have gotten a chance to meet several of the big names over the years.
