Subject: Training a new calf...

Question
Hi my name is Nikki i'm 15 years old and i want to train my new calf she's already a week old. How should i go 'bout this? I've tried to let her get used to me petting her, but the momma and one of our heifers won't even let me get close to her! What should i do with out getting trampled? I want to halter break her, for our next county fair... and my dad is letting me be fully responseable for her...

Answer
Many mother cows are fussy the first few weeks. I don't want you getting hurt. Just make your self available and when the time is right Im sure Mom will let you closer. In the mean time from a distance she can see and hear you. My son used to take a book out in the pens, sit on a bucket and just read out loud. This way the babies all could hear his voice and see him. Many times they would come up and sniff him on their own. Just because you can't touch her body, doesn't mean you can't touch her mind. You can sing, do what ever, just be available for the day when Mom decides its ok and the calf decided to come to you. Many halter break at weaning and do just fine. I agree that the sooner the better, however thats not always safe or possible due to safety issues.
Its great that your dad has given you this calf. Please remember Rome wasn't built in a day, and your safety comes first.
