Subject: Calves Sucking on each others ears??

Question
I have some bottle-fed calves that keep sucking on each other's ears is there anything I can do to deter them from doing this?

Thanks.
Lisa

Answer
If its just their ears you are lucky. Calves in the field with their mothers suck all day when they are not sleeping. This is natural and a survival thing. when I have just one calf I get one of those dog toy pacifiers and that works for some of the natural need the calf has to suck.. however you will not stop it and punishment is futile. Separate them if it bothers you.. feeding 3-4 times a day rather than once a day also helps. Smaller holes in the nipple means more suck time as well and they create more saliva aiding in natural digestion needs. Basically, there isn't a hole lot you can do to stop it.. you can only curb it.
