Cows/Cattle/bull breeding lifespan

Question
Due to drought conditions in OK, we are selling our 10 cows, calves, and 4.5 yr old registered black angus.  Although the sale barns are paying well, we don't want him to be hamburger meat yet and would prefer to sell him for breeding since he's a very gentle bull and great producer. We bought him at 1.5 yrs old for $1500. Can you tell me what the average breeding span is so I know if it's worth trying to sell him to breed and if so, would he be worth more or less since he's older?  Any other info would also be appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Pat,

At four and a half years of age he would still deemed productive, especially since he still has great temperament and a proven sire.  I've heard of some producers keeping bulls until past the age of 15 years and they are still quite promiscuous, having no problems breeding cows for that amount of time.  If he's been proven that he still has good fertility (like he passed his semen test with flying colours), then he definitely could be sold to another producer as a breeder.

I would think that he would be worth more, since he is a proven sire, and not as a virgin bull when you bought him.  I would not sell him through the auction mart, but maybe through private treaty to someone who is looking for a good herd bull like him.

Finally, I am very sorry to hear that you have to sell off your cattle.  I hope things get better for you and the rains come soon for your area.
