Question
I buy baby calves ,age unknown. Is there an set age when calves begin to chew their cuds.

Answer
Cows chew cud because it helps them to secrete saliva. Their saliva has a type of natural antacid in it, which helps to control the acid levels in the rumen the first compartment of the stomach. This allows a cow to digest grass and hay better and to eat even more feed.  Depending on what type of feed you have the calves on the probably will chew cud from the beginning.  Once you put them on creep feed or another type of grain they should start chewing.
