Crafts - making a graduation shadow box

Expert: Sheila M. Krueger - 7/16/2009

Question
Good Morning....My youngest Son recently graduated with a Master's of Arts in Criminology. I'm wanting to place his Hood, two Honor Medals, and one of his tassels in a large shadow box. I need to be able to attach these items without doing damage or applying any adhesives that would damage the medals or the material of the Master's Hood.
I've never attempted a shadow box other than a military memorial to my Dad.
What kinds of adhesive are available? I live in a very small southern town in Arkansas...so my options will be limited.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you

Joyce:

Congratulations to you and your son! What a great career he has ahead of him!

My suggestion would be to mark the spots that need to be adhered, sew (just a couple of quick LARGE basting-type stitches) a small circle of acid-free paper to that spot and then use an acid-free adhesive (glue or scrapbooking adhesives would all work) to attach the paper to the shadow box. In this way, you can remove the stitches down the road if you disassemble the box and will not have harmed the fabric.

For the medals, you can purchase clear plastic coin display units on-line or at a coin collector store. If they are contained in the plastic, you can again use the acid-free adhesive to attach the plastic to the shadow box.

If you don't want to have them in plastic, there is a 3-M product called "Pop-Dots", an acid-free adhesive that you could use. They shouldn't discolor the medals and you would be able to remove them later if you need/want to.

Hope that helps!!!

Good luck.
