Crafts/Painting on metals

Question
Hi Joanie, =O) I would like to paint on metals but I have some questions: Can you use acrylics on metal, rather than oils? and do you HAVE to use a metal primer? I'm very sensitive to smells (cleaners, primers, etc) so I would rather NOT use a primer if it absolutely necessary. Thanks in advance! Donna

Answer
Hi Donna,
I love painting on metal things especially saw blades. When I prep them I make sure they are clean and free of any rust. (You really should use a metal primer as this keeps the blade from rusting in the future.) Also it is a good base for the paints. What I use is a spray primer and a spray color, a clear spray sealer. The sealer is used after spraying the primer and after the color is painted on. Try to use the products from the same manufacture, this way you know they are compatable. Also it is perfect to use acrylic paints. Thats all I ever use. I use a matte primer but a gloss sealer, it's your personal choice. I do all of the prep out side in my patio, but on a nice day you can do this out in the open. Things tend to dry faster and better on warm days, and on cold days it takes a bit longer. I hope I covered everything and I wish you tons of fun painting.

I am a Tole/Decorative painter. I love painting Lighthouses anc Barns and anything else that takes my fancy. I also know how to prep things such as: saw blades, wood, glass, ceramic, masonry, etc.
