Crafts - Polymer Clay safe for Aquariums?

Expert: Nanetta Bananto - 9/3/2007

Question
Hi-
Would you happen to know if I can safely make my aquarium decorations out of Sculpey, etc?  It would be perfect for rock caves if not toxic to fish.
Thanks-

Answer
Dear Dawn - Although most polymer clay is classified non-toxic, it is not recommended for use on anything having contact with food, such as dishes, bowls, silverware, etc.  You are not to use tools which would later be used in contact with foods, so if it is not a good idea for humans, I don't think it would be a good idea for fish.  You might ask the aquarium shop or pet store if there is a substance which is safe for use with fish.  Good luck! Nanetta
