Question
Should you be able to easily make a handprint in Sculpey clay?  I've never used
the product before.  Bought a kit to make a keepsake handprint, but, after
rolling out the clay, it seems too hard to make any kind of impression in without
breaking the participants fingers from pushing so hard.  Should I invest in some
clay softening diluent or just try some fresh clay?

Dear Heather -

Yes, you should be able to make handprints.  If the clay is that hard, there are several things you can do.  You can get fresh clay and use the clay in the kit for another project.  Unless it is crumbly, it can be conditioned and used.  If you can roll it out, it is still usable.
 
To soften the clay, you can put the rolled piece a foot or more below a light.  (If it is any closer, it can begin to cure the clay).  You could also add some translucent clay to the clay in the kit.  White clay tends to be more dense than other colors.  Mix the two well.  You will get a more porcelain appearance in the finished product.  You can add diluent, but it is tricky stuff.  It can make the clay really sticky while you are working it.  
Did you condition the clay before you rolled it out?  You must work the clay before using it.  Conditioning is another word for kneading.  Knead the clay until it is soft and pliable.  It is easiest to pinch off pieces and condition small amounts at a time, then roll them all together.  The clay should be soft enough to take an impression without excessive pressure.  Experiment with your own hand to see how it goes.  Then roll it up and start over until it feels right.
