Question
I want to paint on a couple of old saw blades, but how do I get the rust off and what do I do to prep them and what kind of paint is best?

Answer
Hi Glenda,
I love painting on old saw blades and they come out so nice. So first thing to do is sand the rust off, both sides. When the blade is free of rust, wipe it down so there is no residue left. Then use a good spray primer for metal, I use either dark grey or white. You may have to spray a couple of times, just make sure each coat is dry before spraying another one on. Then I like to spray a nice flat black on both sides and then you can paint your design using plain acrylics. After that is finished use a good spray sealer and you have the choice of matte finish which is dull or gloss which is shiny. It's always better to spray several light coats than 1 heavy coat. I did a 6' blade for a friend 8 years ago and it looks like I just painted it. I wish you well and have fun painting.
