Crafts/pewter casting custom rings
Expert: Jochem Riskin - 5/30/2006
QuestionMr. Riskin, I was wondering what steps must I take to make a
custom designed ring. I have the designs drawn, and have decent
enough sculpting skills, but I don't know the steps to take from
design to an actual pewter ring on my finger. Any help you could
offer would be most appreciated. Thanks!

AnswerDear Greg,
Once you have made a prototype out of stone, would or even wax you can cast it in pewter.
the steps are :
1. create a prototype
2. copy it in a silicon mould ( liquid silicone )
3. refine the mould with flow holes
4. heat up an small amount of pewter in a casting spoon.
5. cast your ring ( probably try it a few times till you
get a good one. Try to make a few spares while your ad
it.
6. remove flashes and brames.
7. polish the ring.
8. since its pewter, use a small lack layer so it won't
give of black to your clothes.
It is however no so easy to do this. And also rather expensive if it is for just one piece. I reccomend that :
A. you go to your silicon supplier ( get silicone that ressists up to 400°C ), and ask him to help you with the mould at least.
Or send your prototype to a pewter caster near by,
and talk to him about it. If you find someone willing,
he might ad it to another mould he has to make; and make you your copy cheaper then if you had to learn+by all the material.
