Creditors and Bankruptcy - Denied Credit

Expert: Ontrack Financial Group llc - 6/24/2009

Question
Hi, I recently applied for a Capital One card and got denied when I have a excellent credit score.  My score is 750.  There reasoning was the I owed too much on my mortgage???  What?  I owe 130,000 and have never missed a or been late in 12 years....  So my husband also tried to apply who has a credit score of 780.  They told him the same thing.  Then we thought we'd see about lowering our interest on our home cuz the rates are at a all time low.  So I called our mortgage company and they told us that because we were not in a financial hardship that the could not help us....  What?  They did tell us to be late on our payments a couple months and then they could see what they could do...  Are you kidding me??  We don't want to change mortgage companies because we have a unique property which is really hard to get financed for.  So basically in this day in age if you have good credit it doesn't matter???  I just don't understand that there is help for those who can't make their payments and not for those who can....

Answer
Dear Desiree,

Thank you for contacting Ontrack Financial Group.

You're correct on many fronts as there is assistance for struggling consumers, while banks have turned their back on consumers who have made great financial decisions.

Credit card companies revamped their lending standards in wake of the credit crunch and credit card losses above 10 %.

You have a few options.

1.  Look into an American Express without a revolving line of credit.

2.  There's zero incentive for the bank to lower your interest. Look into refinancing your home loan (if it makes financial sense).

Banks assist homeowners struggling with mortgage loans banks to protect their asset from foreclosure.

Good Luck
