Creditors and Bankruptcy/hospital bills

Question
I was in a car accident in March 2007. I was 19 and I thought I was covered
under my father's car insurance and his health insurance. The car insurance
paid their miniscule amount. However, the health insurance finagled their
way out of paying for a dime. It was a requirement that I be in college.  I was
in the middle of transferring colleges and was accepted to a new school for
the summer semester, but the accident messed me up so I ended up starting
my first college again in the fall instead. Since the accident happened in my
ONE off semester they wouldn't pay. I have bills from the first hospital ER I
went to, a $16,000 bill from a helicopter service that shuttled me from that
hospital to the next, and bills from that next hospital, all in all totaling
around $30,000. I have been working as a waitress since before this and my
annual income is only around half of that! Maybe a little more. My parents
were dealing with this for me and my mother had the bills and paperwork
sent to her house and she has since lost them. The helicopter service calls me
all the time and I don't know what to do. I don't have extra money for these
bills. I just got married and my husband is in the military. I want to deal with
it ASAP so they don't garnish his wages, since the helicopter company has
threatened garnishing my wages in the future. I'm lost and don't know what
to do. Get a lawyer and fight it since the insurance weaseled their way out of
paying? File bankruptcy? Negotiate a lower sum and pay at once? Payment
plan? There's so many options I don't know! Any help would be appreciated
so much!

Answer
Eileen,

It sounds like you only have 2 options.  Ask what the most affordable payment options you can obtain are...and if they don't fit your budget you'll want to talk to a bankruptcy attorney.

I can help you repair your credit after the BK but you'll need to resolve the debt from the accident first.
