Cricket - Credit for a Run Out ?

Expert: Alex Edghill - 8/7/2009

Question
When a Stumping occurs both the Bowler and the Wicketkeeper get the credit for the wicket.
When a Run Out occurs who if anyone gets the credit:
a) If a fielder/wicketkeeper throws the ball directly at the stumps
b) If a fielder/wicketkeeper throws the ball to another fielder/wicketkeeper who takes of the stumps.
I ask because on the cricket web site used by my local team under the fielding statistics hold details of stumpings and catches for wicketkeepers, and for fielders details of run outs and catches.
But as a scorer I'm unsure who should be credited with a run out.

Answer
It really varies from league to league and even from team to team in leagues. Often if it is a direct hit from a fielder or wicketkeeper they are given "credit" for the runout, or if a fielder is throwing to the wicketkeeper he and the 'keeper are given "credit".

Just bear in mind its all subjective and different scorers will no doubt have different interpretation since there are no black and white laws governing it. The above scenario is most common in international cricket so i'd probably recommend it as a guide.
