---Well, PEZ after answering all your questions to get an answer, I really didn't get one.  The reason I asked in the first place is due to you being the expert, not to seek my answers else where or through some book. NO one new of the taping, not even one party, as i explained twice. I live in New York.  Is this evaision of privacy and what are my rights, if any concerning this matter?  It  does not seem right that listening in on private converstations would be exceptable in any state, unless it is a law enforcement investigation. NO one would agree to this unless it was for an investigation.  Does your websit cover such issues?  I'm sorry if I seem upset, it's justI waited days and didn't get an anwer, just questions that led to no answer.  What was the point? Could you inform me of website with state laws? I Hoped to get somewhere by asking an expert,  I don't have time to find out where the person taping, got the device and to seek out a book on these issues. I already waisted to much time on this. ---Answers to your 4 questions. 1. Two-way taping device (taping all conversations coming and going out) 2. Family member. 3. No one knew they were being taped, until we found device taped under table and listened to the tape. 4. Private person as in answered question #2.  My question are all regarding evasion of privacy by a family member, nothing to to with law enforcement, oviously I wouldn't press charges against a law enforcement investigation.  At least I wouldn't think so. Can you please inform me of the laws on someone bugging your phone line?  Is it a crime....? Evaision of privacy, obviously.  What type of crime is it? And what is the possible punishment? Please tell me how I would go about pressing charges in this type of matter. Waiting for you reply with great interest.

How are defining bugging of the phone?
Who would be listening in?
Would either party talkin know its being heard?
Is it law enforcement or a provate person who did the bugging??

Taping of conversations legally by private parties vary greatly state to state.
Some require 1 party knowledge, others a notice its being recorded, consent of all parties, some none at all.

Most places that sell telephone recording devices
sell a book that details the various laws.
I would start there.

Sir,
I gave you best possible answer as the topic actually
takes a book as there possibly 52 variations in laws.
Its hardly burdonsome to pick up a $5 book at Radio Shack or other retailers who sell these devices.
If niether party knew its likily illigal unless the person being recorded was a minor child of the person who owns the actual phone.
