Crime & Law Enforcement Issues & Death Penalty/Car impounded by police

Question
Dear Sir,

I am in a middle of a mess here. My ex-bf's employer called the cops on him for theft. He ran away from the cops and left the car he is using in the parking lot. The car is under my name. Now, the detective called me up and said they impounded the car. If I want to get it, I have to bring him in. Any advise? Please help. Will I also get in trouble because of this? I made absolute clear that whatever crime he did, I had nothing to do with it. My biggest mistake was getting a car for him. Should I just leave the car and let my credit suffer? Please advise.

Thank you,

Karen

Answer
Karen,

You are asking me for legal advice that should be directed towards an attorney and no attorney is going to give you advice for free.  If I told you to do one thing and you got in trouble or I told you to do another thing and it hurt your credit then you could come back and blame it on me.  And honestly there is no way that I can predict what the police will or won't do.   My advice would be to talk to an attorney before you do anything.

Expertise

Please do NOT ask questions about potential jail sentences that you or your friends may receive in court. There is no way for me to know that. I am NOT a probation officer or a parole officer so questions about those subjects will be rejected. I am a police officer with 26 years experience. Can answer questions about crime, police procedure, investigations, criminal law, search and seizure, traffic offenses. Prefer not to answer questions on the death penalty. Please do not ask homework questions. Remember this. The law in every state is different so questions about laws that are specific to your state could be difficult to answer. I also cannot give you legal advice on what to do or not to do in court. I have worked with authors in the past and will be happy to review scenarios or plots with authors to check for believability or accuracy.
