Question
Just out of curiosity, I have a strange question about parole. I've wondered
about this for a while and hope you can answer it for me. Nobody seems to know.
Lets say someone is in prison serving a sentence for a crime they committed in,
for instance, California. What happens if the person has a minor child in
another state, say Nevada. What happens when the person is parolled? I have
always been under the assumption that a person must serve their parole in the
state they committed the crime and served their sentence. But what in the event
of a minor child in another state? Is it common (possible?) for the person to
serve his parole in the state of his minor child? I'd always wondered since it
seems so terrible and sad for the poor child to suffer when a parent does
something stupid, and I wonder how the courts handle such a situation.

Sorry for the delay. It is my understanding that the convict will serve their parole in the jurisdiction of the convicting Court. The parolee will have to abide by restrictions such as checking in with their respective parole agent, showing proof of employment, and not leaving the state, among others. However, a Court may grant special dispensation for the parolee to move under extreme and compelling circumstances if the host Court jurisdiction agrees to monitor the conditions of parole. It is rarely done. The easiest thing to do is contact the Court in the jurisdiction you are interested in and ask if they consider such a request and what steps are necessary to achieve it. Be prepared to hire competent legal counsel to act as a liaison.
