Crime & Law Enforcement Issues & Death Penalty/Police Protection

Question
Haha, yes, I know, TV is misleading.

In this situation that I brought up, let's say the woman is kidnapped by a stranger, and found, but the stranger is still at large.  Would the police escort her to a safe place until the suspect is found?  or would they leave her in the custody of family and friends?  How much would they contribute to her protection?

Question -
I'm going to give a scenario, and I'd like to know how the police would handle it.  Say a woman is kidnapped, found a few days later, but the crook cannot be found.  How would the police handle the investigation, and to what lengths would they go to protect the woman from a future assault, until the kidnapper is found?

Answer -
Jennifer,

There is no standard way that any crime is investigated.  You have given me just the bare facts of a case so it would depend on many many things on how the case is investigated.  Some of the variables would be whether it is a ransom demand, a case of a sexual nature, one where a family member is a suspect, a stranger, I could go on and on but in the end there is no standard way because every case is different.  And actually kidnappings are very rare.  The public thinks, from tv and the movies, that they happen all of the time.

Answer
Jennifer,

I hope that you realize that the scenario that you are proposing has probably happened twice in the history of the country but since you need an answer I am going to again tell you that there are no two cases that are the same.  What might happen in one case wouldn't happen in another case because of the circumstances.  But I know that you need an answer so I will say that the police would suggest that the victim move out of town temporarily along with trusted family members.

Please do NOT ask questions about potential jail sentences that you or your friends may receive in court. There is no way for me to know that. I am NOT a probation officer or a parole officer so questions about those subjects will be rejected. I am a police officer with 26 years experience. Can answer questions about crime, police procedure, investigations, criminal law, search and seizure, traffic offenses. Prefer not to answer questions on the death penalty. Please do not ask homework questions. Remember this. The law in every state is different so questions about laws that are specific to your state could be difficult to answer. I also cannot give you legal advice on what to do or not to do in court. I have worked with authors in the past and will be happy to review scenarios or plots with authors to check for believability or accuracy.
