Question
I have had Social Security card stolen and it is being used by someone under another name.. :( I signed up for a lease at some apartments and when they did the credit check, 2 names showed up. In order to complete the lease I have pending, I need to goto my local SS office and show valid ID to recieve an authorization letter stating that it is MY Social security number. OK, here is my question:

I have a traffic ticket in another county that I have not paid yet. I was recently sent a Warrant for this. I almost have the money to pay this fine and take care of the warrant, but need to go by the Social Security office ASAP. SO, When I goto the SS office to show them my valid ID, if I have a misdemeanor warrant will they arrest me after scanning my Drivers License?? I really need to know before I go, and I am going to pay my traffic tickets as soon as I can. Please help me out with any information you might have.

Answer
Mack,

I have no idea if someone will arrest you when you go to take care of your situation.  That is an impossible question to answer since were are dealing with a potential of hundreds of different employees, different procedures in different states all of which operate seperately.  Wouldn't it be simpler to call first and talk to a supervisor and explain your situation and then arrange to meet that person when you go in?

Please do NOT ask questions about potential jail sentences that you or your friends may receive in court. There is no way for me to know that. I am NOT a probation officer or a parole officer so questions about those subjects will be rejected. I am a police officer with 26 years experience. Can answer questions about crime, police procedure, investigations, criminal law, search and seizure, traffic offenses. Prefer not to answer questions on the death penalty. Please do not ask homework questions. Remember this. The law in every state is different so questions about laws that are specific to your state could be difficult to answer. I also cannot give you legal advice on what to do or not to do in court. I have worked with authors in the past and will be happy to review scenarios or plots with authors to check for believability or accuracy.
