Question
I'm curious about the numbers assigned to different court proceedings. In the show Law & Order, they make references to part numbers for courts. Someone might say, "I'm due in part 46 later today." When they switch to a court scene, they might put up in a graphic a reference to the court part number. I'm certain it does not refer to the number of sessions for that particular trial.
Do these numbers signify anything?

The numbers on Law and Order relate to internal categorizing (for trial purposes) and more important help to break up the scenes on TV so the viewing audience knows where the actors are at and what they are doing.  

Most trials do not break a trial down into a numbering system like your question asks where the counsel run to each section.  Some trials may be bifurcated or split where the jury will hear the case first, and then decide on sentencing next, etc.     

For the most part the Law & Order references are to guide the viewers.
